The Honor Roll Project - Oceanside, New York

As part of Heather Wilkinson Rojo's Honor Roll Project, I have transcribed these Rolls of Honor in Oceanside, NY to make the names visible to search engines so that family researchers can find them. Please consider finding the Honor Roll(s) in your town or village and transcribing them on your blog or website. Some rolls are long and some are short but there's no deadline, you can take as long as you need to transcribe an honor roll.  I've learned so much about local history through this project and when someone finds the name of an ancestor in one of my posts they are grateful and excited! And even if you don't have a blog or website, you can ask me or another participating blogger. I would be happy to create a post to share your photos and transcription!

Although Oceanside is right next door to me, I had no idea where to find their memorial and rolls of honor until I Googled for information about their Memorial Day parade. Articles in local papers told me that the parade would end at Oceanside High School. I have found that Memorial Day and Veteran's Day parades usually end at the local memorial unless they stop along the way somewhere for a wreath-laying, which is usually mentioned in the article.

The Patriot's Club at the high school also creates this Field of Honor every year for Memorial Day.

This field is on the side of the school, on Skillman Avenue, where it will get the most exposure.

This is the Veterans Memorial in front of the school, to the right of the main entrance.

On the left is the Honor Roll, remembering those who "made the supreme sacrifice" in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan; one soldier is listed as dying "In Service."
